Mernels for the Special Kids with KC Los Baños & 3A Clubs from Metro Manila joined forces in an activity

Los Baños, Laguna—The leading cake house in Laguna and now making a name nationwide for its famous chocolate cakes and rolls, Mernels, is always in different civic activities especially if it’s all about giving for the children.

When the Kiwanis International, Philippine Luzon District under Division 3A lead, Engr. Grace Bondad Nicolas conducted projects and activities to help the different clubs under her jurisdiction, it’s a staple, the different leading brands such as Mernels with its CEO Merle Balicao with the help and assistance of Ronald Calibo, the energetic manager of Mernels.

As early as 8AM, today, April 16, 2023, the medical mission from Kiwanis Club of McKinley headed by President Rocaya Mangondato conducted the check up for these special kids from 5 year olds to 13. They were given with vitamins and advised the parents on their kids conditions.

Past President of Kiwanis Club of Malate West conducted a seminar for the parents and discussed about the following;

•How to recognize a child with special needs

•Acceptance

•Dealing with growing children with special needs

Afterwards, Past President Lorna Ballesteros turned over things needed by the organization to its directress that will be used by the children. They ended the forum also with a Q&A headed by Sister Evelina Tan of Malate West.

Manila Bay President, Ezelle Gascon provided colorful toys for the children while Lieutenant Governor, Engr. Grace Bondad Nicolas provided the lunch for everyone. The team were so grateful with Mernels Cake House for providing snacks for all while Past President of Kiwanis Club of Los Baños and now President Elect, Carmen Garan provided the drinks.

Then and till now, the company, Mernels carried the task to share blessings with responsibility to convey message of love, humility and being grateful and to be involved in humanitarian works is not easy especially in these trying times where all are still pivoting and surviving after the global health crisis.

The Los Baños Community Center, Center for therapy, intervention and support is a private organization but situated in the building from the local government. They received grants from Canada and private institutions. Kiwanis International is a non government organization that’s focuses on the children and aims to help the indigent kids in one community at a time. According to reports, Kiwanis International in average conducted 150,000 service projects yearly globally.

At present, the major root of Mernels Corporate Social Responsibility program (#malasakitsakapwa) is to provide more employment and opportunities while also assisting in the alleviation of poverty in the community as its one Value. MerNel's ambitions came true as matters fell into place with the right combination of hard work, dedication, sacrifices, and prayers. However, success is not an accident; it is a decision. There is no such thing as an overnight success, every success and glory are non-accidental but rather intentional.

HerStory: Grace Bondad Nicolas of Rising Tigers

We all have our story and all the time, it’s inspiring. For Industrial Engr. Grace Bondad Nicolas who keeps on breaking the glass ceiling for her various activities not just for her business but also as a civic leader, it’s not easy but with consistency, you’ll achieve all.

“One of the organizations I’m with is Kiwanis International under Philippines Luzon District, one of my business mentors, Hotelier, Dr. Elton See Tan of The E Hotels & Resorts recruited me to be part of the Makati club and I joined because of my trust to him. Also, for me, it’s human nature to give, I grew up in a loving and giving family, being with the organization will only amplify the things I can do to help the indigent children.” - Grace Bondad Nicolas

As a business leader especially of the newest and most distributed business and leadership magazine right now in National Bookstores, Rising Tigers, Engr. Grace is the founder who conceptualized the concept of the magazine together and with the help of the CEO of Tag Media Group, the publisher of the magazine and also her husband, Andrew Troy Nicolas. When she’s little, she loves to write and contribute, at one time, her write up was published in her high-school publication in Canossa College, San Pablo City in Laguna. So having the magazine is a dream come true and more.

Brian Poe Llamanzares, a serial entrepreneur and the CEO of Pantheon Holdings is now the co owner of Rising Tigers, according to him, “the team is very confident that it will top the market with its innovations and quality of content. The magazine has already perfected its marketing strategy even-though it’s still new and will celebrate its first anniversary this March 2023. A lot of big names in the business industry have already confirmed and committed their support. While I’m looking forward to helping the company grow.”

“Imagine that when everything is going digital, where printing hardcopies. Everything is a challenge but with the support of my family and partners, we achieved it. While others are stopping, we’re starting. Now, Rising Tigers is the go to magazine if you like to be inspired by the stories of these industry leaders, we’re making sure that it will make an impact and we did. We’re overwhelmed.”- Grace Bondad Nicolas

Grace actually is the COO of their company, Tag Media Group, the umbrella holding company of AAA Cosmetics, AG Builders, Rising Tigers Trading and Tag Media and Public Relations. As the Chief Operations Officers, she’s the one communicating with everyone, from the suppliers, clients, the organizing team and partners.

Her eldest daughter is now the Chief Marketing Officer, Andria Terese Nicolas overseeing the emerging & featured leaders for the magazine and handling a portion of suppliers to make sure that the branding is handled well. According to Grace, Andria is more feisty, direct and she knows what’s best for the younger generation in terms of campaigns for the magazine and Tag Media and Public Relations.

As being the first woman and Filipina president of American Association of the Philippines after 73 years, Grace is overwhelmed. The organization is composed of Americans, Filipino Americans and Filipino leaders who likes to improve and help everyone though the mandate is to focus on Americans in the Philippines after the war, the organization widens its mandate to help everyone within its capacity. Grace left the organization already but Andria is a member and curving her own path.

“Being elected is already a success, as a woman, it gives me more confidence. They trusted me. Being the first Filipina made me feel that I can do more bigger things, we’re not just the one assisting, we’re leading and that inspires me to mentor more emerging leaders to contour what’s standard.”- Grace Bondad Nicolas

Grace is the president of Los Baños Chamber of Commerce and Industry for 2023 to 2025 and spearheading the business leaders in the area to promote the special city and to entice investors in Laguna. Her popularity as the woman who can do made her the head of the organization with the first project of a business forum last year with the two grandsons of the former Philippine presidents as speakers; Paco Magsaysay and Robert Laurel Yupangco who bought came to Laguna from Manila to shared their business expertise.

During Pandemic, she establishes two companies and according to her, grew the company for 300%. For her, taking risk is part of the challenge to success. Her late father who was an entrepreneur trained her and made sure that she can do what her heart desires by supporting her in all means possible. For Grace, there must be no stopping, the recent pandemic will only proves who are the real leaders who can adapt and can pivot.

“My parents asked me to help them in the hardware store that supplies construction materials in Laguna when I was in Grade 6, I counted the concrete hallow blocks, weight the common wire nails and counted cements, I loved it, I told myself that I’m helping them in my capacity, little did I know that they were already training me for what’s to come. As for my father, he told me that school will only trained us about problem solving but the real deal is after the graduation. I envied my parents buisness acumen, they keep on winning, there’s challenges as part of life but still, comparing with my age right now, haven’t achieve yet what they had. Everything I have now is from the discipline and hard work, as much as I wanted to work 24/7, I can’t but putting my best every-time as if it’s the end of the world.” Grace Bondad Nicolas

For Grace, she’s not yet done but just starting. She believes that all the things she’s doing is just a speck of what’s needs to be done. It’s about building legacy according to her, making a difference in the life’s of many and for the next generation to be emulated. For her, it’s always about the future, but to achieve that, that’s saying “No” also to many.

“We’re not here to please everyone, if that’s your goal, you’re not gonna be happy and at peace to yourself. It’s about integrity, true to your values and saying no is first thing to achieve success. There might be detractors but its usual, you just need to focus on a higher goal and that’s to do great things to many not just for the selected few who don’t believes in you. There’s always challenges, it’s part of life and if you overcome those, that’s real success.”- Grace Bondad Nicolas

Right now, Grace is busy as the Queen of Events, as tagged by the media in promoting the Philippines as the premier business hub in Asia and destination through her multiple activities nationwide. She’s the Vice President of Makati Tourism Foundation where she met tourism and industry leaders and learned so much from them.

For Grace, it’s all about consistency, she grew up doing what she’s doing and now, harvesting what her parents instilled to her. To do great things from the hardest work she can put her hands into. For her, if there’s option, always choose the one that’s hard to fulfill, if overcome, that’s the start of your own story to tell.

Shawarma Shack with Civic Organization dedicated time for indigent children

One of the young leaders of this generation with proven success. The person behind the success of Shawarma Shack is its Founder, President, and CEO, Walther Uzi Buenavista. In the seven years that Buenavista has been managing the business, his direction is always laser-focused on his three main motivations: Growth, Innovation, and Employment.

For Walther, Growth is also about reaching the indigents in his own ways. Sending rice bowls for the volunteers, last April 1, 2023, Shawarma Shack contributed in the success of the all-around service to 100 children in the heart of Barangay Tatalon, Quezon City.

Kiwanis International Philippine Luzon District Division 3A clubs under the leadership of their energetic and supportive Lieutenant Governor Grace Bondad Nicolas serviced more than 100 indigent children and successfully got their rewards …… putting a smile in the children’s faces.

Spearheading the project was KC Manila Bay officers and members headed by their President Ezelle Gascon together with KC Makati, KC BGC McKinley with President Rocaya Mangondato, KC Malate West with their past president Lorna Ballesteros, KC. Pasay, KC Pasay Eagle, KC Pasay North with the upcoming Governor Glenda Veloria Hufano and KC Reachin Beyond. They prepared the food, gifts and games.

Free magic show sponsored by Elemento Group of Magic truly entertained the crowd and captured the kids’ attention and curiosity.

KC BGC  McKinley headed by it’s  President  Dr. Rocaya Vanessa Sarangani-Mangondato

conducted medical check- up on the kids, and provided their needed medicines and vitamins.

KC Pasay, KC Pasay North and KC Pasay Eagle gave away hygiene kits with DGE Glenda Hufano gracing the occasion.

KC Reachin Beyond endorsed the magic show not just for the children but for everyone in attendance. A magical day indeed.

KC Malate West offered psychological testing and counseling at The Child's World in  nearby Banawe Street, there being no  children with special needs that day.

KC Makati treated the tired but fulfilled Kiwanian volunteers to buffet dinner at Illos of the Pearl Garden Hotel, Adriatico, courtesy of LG Grace Bondad Nicolas.

Brother Eduardo A. Castro, Social Service Coordinator of the Sto. Domingo Parish assisted the Kiwanis officers and members in the planning and implementation of the successful activity.  Missionaries Fathers Simon and Peter from the parish church received the extra toys for their celebration the next day, marking an extension of our outreach up to Palm Sunday!

This growth was also fueled by Walther’s desire to bring their products closer to the customers. Shawarma Shack now has stores in key locations across the country with over 750 branches and still counting. "It presented a significant growth in terms of augmenting the demand from our customers and expanding enterprise sales, Buenavista pointed out.

Sharing the blessings is what the company is doing since the beginning, having been awarded for the Philanthropic works not just for the single community they keeps on helping but their corporate social responsibilities nationwide, Shawarma Shack truly is reaching the indigents and marginalized.

Camaraderie to increase collaboration as initiated by Kiwanis 3A Lead in her tenure

You cannot give what you don’t have, for Illos whole day Buffet located at Pearl Garden Hotel at Adriatico in Malate, Manila, they gave all the way, deliciously.

Kiwanis members from Division 3A which are located around Metro Manila after their civic activity in Quezon City for the indigent children went straight to have dinner at the newly opened restaurant and to continue discussing the next projects for their respective clubs. This is their second time at Illos Buffet courtesy of their Lieutenant Governor, the highest position in their Division.

The Lieutenant Governor, Engr. Grace Bondad Nicolas believes for collaboration and to treat the members at the same time to have camaraderie.

Camaraderie is the spirit of friendship and trust that can exist between people who spend a great deal of time together. When there's camaraderie in the workplace, team members trust each other and genuinely enjoy working together. This can increase collaboration, efficiency, and overall productivity.

“It’s not easy to put up activities especially that all members are busy and giving time and effort to help out is already a plus point. There’s also challenges in being together since the availability of time is different but they pulled off to be in one place with one goal, to share the blessings at the same time. For my administration that started October last year till September this year, I want them to feel their importance with me and for supporting the division which I am doing also in all organizations where I lead. I am also grateful for their trust.”- Engr. Grace Bondad Nicolas

Engr. Grace Bondad in the start of her tenure as the one in charge announced that there will be no payments in all council meetings under her, she’s also the President of Los Baños Chamber of Commerce and doing the same. According to her, she will make it always easier for everyone to attend meetings and making it more fun so that everyone will always look forward to attend.

Leadership according to Engr. Grace is also saying no. Not everyone according to her has the same goal and saying no sometimes is for the good of one organization. Determined she is to prove also that she has her own kind of leadership, it’s to treat all equally, no red tape and no “Palakasan.”

“A lot of real leaders comply, there’s no excuses, I am with genuine leaders all the time, I observed, I adapted their best practices and I started to say no. That will give you peace of mind, saying yes to all will not make you happy and I am not that person. If you don’t comply, it’s a no. I am not a pleaser but I’ll prove to you what I can do towards achieving any goals in the table. I belong to a lot of organizations, elected as the first woman president of American Association of the Philippines after 74 years and that’s something already, I am not even an American. What I can promise, I can deliver since I will not stop in achieving that objective.”- Engr. Grace Bondad Nicolas

According to Engr. Grace Bondad Nicolas, if will be given a chance to help more, she will apply all she learned not just from the different organizations she’s in but also what she learned from her parents, to do what’s best in her capacity for the welfare of everyone, not just for the few.

Kiwanis members from different parts of the globe with the objective to improve the welfare of the indigent children and statistically provides more than 150,000 service projects annually globally. Glenda Veloria Hufano is the upcoming Governor this October 2023 that will lead  over 5000 members nationwide which comprises 27 divisions.
