Biodiversity Financing Saving the Earth

The Philippines is one of 17 mega diverse countries, harboring more diversity of life per hectare than any other country in the world. Yet encroachment in forested areas, pollution, over fishing, poor land management practices, are leading to biodiversity loss at an alarming rate.

To address these threats, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB) with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), other national government agencies, academe, civil society and development partners, has developed the Philippines Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (PBSAP). The PBSAP is the country’s road map in conserving biodiversity and critical ecosystem services for the next 13 years.

Similarly, through the UNDP’s Biodiversity Financing Initiative (BioFin), the DENR-BMB has  determined the financing gap of implementing the PBSAP, estimated to be at least Php 334 billion (US$7.4 billion) over the next 13 years [PhP24 billion annually]. This covers actions on: forest, coastal and marine, inland wetlands, caves and cave systems, protected areas, invasive alien species, agrobiodiversity, access and benefit-sharing and urban biodiversity.

A SPAGHEALTHY GOODNESS FOR THE HOLIDAY

Every Christmas, our Moms always prepare something special for Noche Buena and make the Christmas table festive as possible.   The Christmas table will never be complete without the Christmas ham, chicken, and pasta dishes like spaghetti and macaroni salad.

However, with the growing awareness and trend on health and wellness, Moms look for healthy alternative dishes that they can serve to their family.  They look for food that are low calorie, high-fiber and rich in vitamins, but still a delectable dish that their family can enjoy.

El Real has long responded to the healthy needs of wise, practical moms with the offering of El Real Healthy Spaghetti.  EL Real Healthy Spaghetti is the first naturally healthy spaghetti in the local market that is made with real Malunggay and Carrot bits.  It is high in fiber because it has Durum Wheat Semolina, has 0% Cholesterol, 0% Trans Fat and has Vitamin A, C and Calcium.  What’s more is that, it has no veggie taste that your kids will surely love.

In Celebration of World Pasta Month A PASTA FESTA FOR THE PEOPLE

Craving for a bit of Italian? The first thing that comes to mind is a big heaping bowl of pasta, covered with your favorite sauce and sprinkled with lots of Parmesan cheese. It is a dish that everyone loves to eat often, that pasta has become a kitchen pantry staple. DoĂąa Elena Al Dente Pasta brings a taste of Italy to the Filipino home with its line of Italian artisanal pasta noodles, made of 100% durum wheat semolina.

DoĂąa Elena Al Dente Pasta is produced according to the tradition of true Italian pasta. There is actually an Italian law prescribing that pasta must be made using 100% durum wheat semolina, which is the hardest of all the wheat varieties and has the highest protein content. It is the use of durum wheat that makes pasta “al dente” or “firm to the bite.” DoĂąa Elena Al Dente Pasta is also made using the traditional bronze die, which gives the noodles ridges, thereby helping the sauce cling better to the noodles for a richer flavor. Plus, DoĂąa Elena uses all natural GMO-free ingredients in its pasta, which makes it really good for you!

Over the years, pasta has become such a favorite dish for Filipinos. In fact, almost every gathering or special occasion isn’t complete without a big platter of spaghetti or baked macaroni. Or maybe even an original recipe using shrimp, Spanish sardines or spicy tuyo. DoĂąa Elena Al Dente Pasta brings the Filipinos’ passion for this versatile noodle to the forefront with the celebration of the World Pasta Month this October. This celebration was initiated in Rome in 1995 with the First World Pasta Congress, and countries all over the world have come up with their own festivities since. After all, pasta is a global food consumed in all continents and is a perfect fit for a dynamic and healthy lifestyle. The campaign and series of events highlight every foodie’s love for pasta and how it has become such an integral part of Pinoy culture.

TRAVELING TO NEW HEIGHTS IN STYLE WITH THE ALL-NEW NISSAN NV350 URVAN

Transporting people and their stuff from one place to another has long been a prosaic chore, usually requiring nothing more than a utilitarian van to meet the requirement.  That is, until Nissan came out with the Urvan, which became a hit with the general public for its major advantages.

Since its inception in Japan in 1973, the Urvan has undergone five iterations ever since. Here in the Philippines, the Urvan made its presence felt, both for family use and in the public transport sector.
“Shuttle operators preferred the Urvan for its proven reliability, passenger comfort and strong air-conditioning system, flexible loading and seating capacity for both cargo and passenger,” said Antonio Zara, President and Managing Director of Nissan Philippines Inc. (NPI).

And now, there is more reason to rejoice, as NPI introduces the latest generation van, the all-new NV350 Urvan. Designed to meet the needs of entrepreneurs, shuttle operators, and family users, the 5th generatation NV350 Urvan sports an overhaul to its design and key features, making this vehicle a strong contender in the commercial van class.
CLASS-LEADING POWER
For one, Nissan upgraded its engine into a powerful 2.5L engine, based on the same engine platform used for the all-new NP300 Navara pickup truck. This means that drivers now can rely on a powerful engine that can effortlessly pull loads of cargo and passengers even on steep, uphill climbs, like on a family week-end trip to Tagaytay or Baguio.  No more switching off the air-con while traversing

mountain passes, or overtaking slow trucks on the highway, with the speed and power now at your fingertips!

Empowering The Public About Intellectual Propery

Description: ipophl logo.jpg

Through Republic Act No. 8293 or the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines, the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) was created. It is the Philippines’ lead agency in implementing state policies on Intellectual Property (IP).

It is headed by a Director General and is composed of seven bureaus:

1.       Bureau of Patents (BOP)
Processes the registration, examination and granting of patent applications, utility models, industrial designs, and integrated circuits

2.       Bureau of Trademarks
Conducts the search, examination, and granting of the applications for the registration of marks, geographic indications and other marks of ownership

3.       Bureau of Legal Affairs
Handles all legal matters concerning Intellectual Property Rights

4.       Documentation, Information, and Technology Transfer Bureau
Provides technical support services to the other bureaus and takes charge of Intellectual Property promotion activities and knowledge management in the country

5.       Management Information Service
In charge of maintaining IPOPHL’s information technology systems

6.       Financial Management and Administrative Service
Ensures the proper utilization of IPOPHL funds

7.       Bureau of Copyright [currently ad hoc]
The newest addition to the IPOPHL family promotes awareness of IP rights and the accreditation of collective management organizations (CMOs)

Aside from the registration of patents, trademarks, and copyright, IPOPHL also offers patent information searches, dispute resolution, adjudication of Inter Partes cases and IP violations, technology transfer, and training.

In an effort to expand the reach of IPOPHL, Intellectual Property Satellite Offices (IPSOs) in Cebu and Davao were established in 2008. After this initiative to make IP services more accessible and to ease the implementation of projects in the said regions, there was an increase in IP filings seen in both areas. Soon after, offices in Baguio City, Angeles City, Legaspi City, Iloilo City, Cebu City, Cagayan de Oro City, Davao City, and General Santos City were set up as a result of two pilot IPSOs’ success.

In 2012, the Innovation Technology Support Office (ITSO) network was established to push for the commercialization of technologies generated from the research outputs of local universities, research institutions, businesses, and inventors. There are currently over 80 certified ITSOs spread throughout the archipelago.

More recently, IP Depot –the Philippines’ first online IP marketplace was launched. Owners of registered IP assets can use the website as a free showground while other users can easily shop for IPs, including the latest and available technology for their businesses.

***

The IPOPHL logo features a letter “O” in the shape of a light bulb, the universal symbol of a good idea. Inside the light bulb is the word “una” which means first, as written in Baybayin, an ancient pre-colonial Philippine writing system used from the 16th to 19th centuries. At IPOPHL, premium is given to being first, as “first in time results in seniority of rights” whether in the registration of a patent, trademark, copyright or other related rights.
