The Experience of Animals in Meat Farms and the Dairy Industry By Grace Bondad Nicolas

A Discussion on Programmed Meat Consumption: Why Do We Eat Animals?

People are conditioned to eat animals. Most never question it, as we have been taught that it is natural. However, discussions about animal welfare are becoming more common, particularly when comparing how we treat farm animals to how we treat pets like dogs and cats, which many consider family members and now have legal protections.

This debate highlights the inconsistency in how we view different animals—why do we show compassion to some while consuming others? To better understand this, let’s examine the lives of animals in meat and dairy farms.

The Life of Animals in Meat Farms

In industrial meat farms, animals such as cows, pigs, and chickens are often raised in high-density environments where their movement is severely restricted.

Cattle in Beef Farms

Cattle raised for beef typically begin their lives on open pastures but are later moved to feedlots, where they are confined in crowded conditions. They are fed grain-based diets designed to fatten them quickly, which can cause digestive issues and discomfort. The stress of overcrowding, limited movement, and exposure to extreme weather can weaken their immune systems.

Pigs in Factory Farms

Pigs in industrial farms live in confined spaces, often in gestation or farrowing crates so small they cannot turn around. Mother pigs (sows) give birth in restrictive cages, preventing them from caring for their piglets naturally. The lack of space and mental stimulation often leads to stress-related behaviors, such as biting the bars of their cages.

Chickens and Turkeys in Factory Farms

Chickens and turkeys raised for meat (broilers) are selectively bred to grow rapidly, leading to health problems such as weak bones and heart failure. They are housed in overcrowded barns with little to no access to natural light. Many birds suffer injuries due to rough handling and transportation.

The Slaughter Process

When animals reach market weight, they are transported to slaughterhouses, often enduring long journeys without food or water. Though regulations exist to minimize suffering, stunning methods sometimes fail, causing animals to experience pain before slaughter.

The Process of Milk Production in Dairy Farms

Dairy cows are selectively bred for maximum milk production, placing significant physical strain on their bodies. The cycle of milk production involves repeated pregnancies, mechanical milking, and eventual slaughter when their milk yield declines.

Life of a Dairy Cow

1. Forced Impregnation – To produce milk, cows must give birth. They are artificially inseminated once they reach reproductive maturity (around 15 months old).

2. Separation from Calves – After birth, calves are usually separated from their mothers within hours to preserve milk for human consumption. This separation is stressful for both the mother and calf.

3. Continuous Milking – Dairy cows are milked 2-3 times a day using machines. High milk production can lead to health issues such as mastitis (a painful udder infection) and lameness.

4. Repeat Cycle – Cows are re-impregnated to maintain milk production. This cycle continues for about 4-6 years before they are deemed unproductive and sent to slaughter.

Fate of Calves

Female calves are usually raised to become dairy cows.

Male calves, since they cannot produce milk, are often sent to veal farms, where they are confined and slaughtered at a young age, or raised for beef.

Ethical and Sustainable Alternatives

Growing awareness of these farming practices has led to increased interest in:

Free-range and pasture-raised meat and dairy products, which provide better living conditions for animals.

Plant-based milk alternatives, such as almond, soy, and oat milk.

Lab-grown meat and dairy, which aim to reduce reliance on animal farming.

The treatment of animals in both the meat and dairy industries remains a topic of ethical debate, with many advocating for more humane farming practices or plant-based alternatives.

George Erwin M. Garcia: Steering the Future of Philippine Elections as COMELEC Chairman

George Erwin Mojica Garcia, appointed as the Chairman of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) in the Philippines, has embarked on a mission to modernize and enhance the electoral process. His tenure is marked by a series of reforms and projects aimed at ensuring transparent, inclusive, and efficient elections. This comprehensive overview delves into Chairman Garcia’s initiatives, his strategic vision for the electoral system, and the impact of his leadership on Philippine democracy.

Early Initiatives and Reforms

1. Implementation of New Vote Counting Machines (VCMs)

One of Chairman Garcia’s significant undertakings is the procurement and deployment of advanced vote counting machines. These new VCMs are designed to enhance transparency and accuracy in the voting process. A notable feature includes a 14-inch viewing screen that allows voters and stakeholders to verify that ballots are accurately counted. This initiative aims to deter electoral malpractices, such as vote-buying, by providing real-time verification of votes cast.

2. Addressing Premature Campaigning

Under Garcia’s leadership, COMELEC has taken a firm stance against premature campaigning. The commission now considers individuals who file their Certificates of Candidacy (COCs) as official candidates from the moment of filing, thereby subjecting them to existing campaign regulations. This policy shift seeks to level the playing field by preventing affluent candidates from exploiting the period between COC filing and the official campaign season to gain undue advantage.

3. Enhancing Accessibility for Vulnerable Sectors

Chairman Garcia has prioritized making the electoral process more accessible to marginalized groups, including senior citizens, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and heavily pregnant women. COMELEC has introduced special polling precincts that operate from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. on election day, exclusively serving these sectors. This initiative ensures that vulnerable voters can participate in elections comfortably and safely, without the challenges posed by large crowds and long waiting times.

4. Support for Electoral Board Members

Recognizing the critical role of teachers and other electoral board members, Garcia has advocated for increased honoraria to compensate for their extended hours and responsibilities during elections. Discussions with the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) have led to proposals for an additional ₱2,000 across-the-board honoraria for these individuals, reflecting COMELEC’s commitment to valuing their contributions.

Technological Advancements and Transparency

1. Digital Access to Statements of Contributions and Expenditures (SOCEs)

In a move towards greater transparency, COMELEC, under Garcia’s direction, has committed to uploading digital copies of SOCEs immediately after elections. This measure allows the public and media to scrutinize campaign finances promptly, promoting accountability among candidates and political parties. The digitalization of these documents also streamlines the monitoring process, making it more efficient and accessible.

2. Introduction of Online Voting for Overseas Voters

To increase electoral participation among Filipinos abroad, COMELEC has initiated online voting systems for overseas voters. This innovation addresses previous challenges faced by overseas voters, such as accessibility to polling stations, and aims to boost voter turnout in this demographic. The online platform ensures a secure and user-friendly experience, reflecting Garcia’s vision of integrating technology to uphold democratic processes.

3. Utilization of Malls as Voting Precincts

Building on successful pilot tests during previous elections, COMELEC has expanded the use of malls as voting precincts. This strategy offers voters a convenient and comfortable environment, potentially increasing voter turnout. Malls provide accessible locations with adequate facilities, ensuring a smoother voting experience, especially in urban areas. This initiative exemplifies Garcia’s commitment to making voting more accessible and efficient for all citizens.

Community Engagement and Voter Registration

1. Special Satellite Registration Programs

Chairman Garcia has actively promoted voter registration through special satellite programs targeting vulnerable sectors. These initiatives, conducted in various locations, aim to register indigenous peoples, women, youth, senior citizens, PWDs, and persons deprived of liberty (PDLs). By bringing registration services closer to these communities, COMELEC ensures broader electoral participation and inclusivity.

2. Register Anywhere Program (RAP)

To further simplify the registration process, Garcia introduced the Register Anywhere Program. This program allows citizens to register to vote regardless of their current location, eliminating the need to travel to their home
