CARING FOR THE COUNTRY'S CARRYING CAPACITY





The 41st Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) of the National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL) will be  held on July 10 to 11, 2019 at EDSA Shangri-la, Mandaluyong. The 41st ASM is hosted by the NAST PHL Mathematical and Physical Science Division with the theme " Caring for the Country's Carrying Capacity."



This annual activity of NAST PHL, attended by some 700 representative from industry, government, and academe, serves as the leading forum for scientific discourse and will culminate in the submission of policy recommendations on appropriate interventions by government and the private sector in realizing the goalos of the Philippine development agenda.


This year, the ASM shall focus on addressing three Sustainable Development Goals. This includes Goal 4-Quality Education. Presentations geared towards Goal 12-Responsible consumption and production will also be delivered, with particular focus on plastics. A plenary session on sustainable marine and food security will be conducted in line with SDG Goal 14-Life below water.


This year's ASM will present an evidence-based holistic analysis of these issues with particular focus on the basic scientific principles needed to address them.

National Scientists and Academicians from NAST PHL and representatives from leading higher institutions are expected to present discussions for the event's plenary sessions. International experts, namely Dr. Andrew H.J. Wang, former Vice President of the Institute of Biological Chemistry in Academia Sinica, Taiwan and Professor Yoo Han Kim, President of the Association of Academies and Societies of Sciences in Asia, will deliver the keynote addresses.


The resolutions formulated in these RSMs were then consolidated and will be presented during the ASM which will afterwards be transmitted to the Office of the President, the Cabinet, and the Congress for their consideration and appropriate action.

Also part of the two-day program is the recognition ceremonies for the following awards: Best Scientific Poster Award, Outstanding Scientific Papers, Outstanding Books and Monographs, The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) Prize for Young Scientists in the Philippines, NAST Environmental Science Award, Maysaysay Future Engineers/Technologists Award, NAST Talent Search for Young Scientists, Outstanding Young Scientist (OYS), and Investiture of the new Academicians.

NAST PHL is an attached agency to the Department of Science and Technology mandated by law to recognize outstanding achievements and advise the President and the Cabinet on matters related to Science and Technology.
