PH promotes stronger participation of youth in ASEAN economic development; launches official network for young entrepreneurs across the region

The Philippines affirmed its continued support for heightened economic participation of youth in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) with the hosting of the 2nd Young Entrepreneurs Carnival (AYEC) on September 5 at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC).

Spearheaded by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in partnership with the Philippine Young Entrepreneurs Association (PYEA), National Youth Commission (NYC), Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) and the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN-BAC), the event staged three panel discussions featuring topics ranging from the role and advantages of young entrepreneurs in the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) to their success stories, best practices and business models.

With the theme “Unleash the Hero in You”, the event showcased the potential of the youth in driving economic progress in the region as modern day heroes, as they provide business solutions and adopt disruptive business models that are essential to sustaining economic growth in the integrated ASEAN Economic Community.

Furthermore, the Carnival also tackled opportunities and support services that will be needed to help the participants overcome the challenges of entrepreneurship in such basic areas as access to finance, market, leadership, technology, and partnerships.

“Youth plays an integral part in sustaining economic development in ASEAN as they leverage their youthful drive to develop new business models aided by technology. While we continue to urge traditional and upcoming businesses to adopt innovative, value-adding, and demand-driven products and services, we are also encouraging more participation of the younger generation in economic ventures,” said DTI Secretary Ramon M. Lopez.

In line with the promotion of inclusivity across all sectors as part of the economic agenda of this year’s ASEAN chairmanship, the Carnival also served as an avenue for the official launching of the ASEAN Young Entrepreneurs Association.

“The Philippines supports the enhancement of networking and regional linkages among young businessmen and entrepreneurs which will help them increase their access to markets, finance, mentoring, and other key support services,” said Secretary Lopez.

Meanwhile, DTI Undersecretary Nora K. Terrado who chairs the ASEAN Committee on Business and Investment Promotion (CBIP) expressed her delight at the turnout as AYEC has become the biggest commemorative event of ASEAN’s 50th anniversary with over 2,000 local and international participants from its 10 member states and dialogue partners.

Terrado noted that the increased number of groups supporting the establishment of private sector-led regional networks is a big boost to businesses in ASEAN, especially for the micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).
“Regional networks such as ASEAN Young Entrepreneurs Association make knowledge sharing among businesses more accessible,” added Terrado.

Another highlight of the 2nd AYEC was the presentation of the 10 finalists from each ASEAN member state and the grand winners of the ASEAN Young Entrepreneur Award by the ASEAN Young Entrepreneurs Council.

Novuhair - Back to Basics

Novuhair - Back to Basics

In the medical world, proper use of words is highly called for because a simple mistake could complicate things usually unwanted for the patients. Because this field has full of jargons that mostly are too technical to not easily be sifted and digested by the general public, putting them in a layman’s term is indeed helpful.

A good example of which are the words “side effect” and “main effect”. These, are more often than not, interchanged or used instead of the other. Doing so is not just wrong but also dangerous to the people’s health.

A side effect of any substance pertains to the result beyond the main or primary action that is intended by the physician giving drug prescription. The doctor, likewise, foresees this extra consequence.

For instance, the patient might not be conscious of the side effect of unwanted hair growth elsewhere on the body while using vasodilator drug called Minoxidil to treat hypertension. The physician, nevertheless, is very well aware about it, as well as other implications, such as burning or irritation of the eye, itching, and redness or irritation at the treated area. By and large, doctors suggest that patients should ignore the side effects unless serious and often alert the sick persons about their likelihood.

But not all the side effects are boon. They are bane, too, hence, they are often used as a therapeutic benefit in the pharmaceutical industry. Like the Minoxidil which, initially was developed to treat high blood pressure. People taking it reported an unusual side effect: Hair began to grow on various parts of their bodies. In this case, the downside of the drug is controlled and employed for a beneficial and therapeutic effect judiciously. It is noted that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved prescription of two percent (2%) Minoxidil topical solution for hair loss in men in 1988 and for women in 1992.

An adverse effect, on the other hand, is identified as an outcome wherein the reaction occurs over and beyond the main and wanted action of a medicine. Both the physician and the patient don’t know about it as a consequence of taking such treatment. It can happen simply due to incorrect dosage. Undesirably, this is very harmful as it can exacerbate the prognosis of the disease. Occasionally, if the adverse effect is too serious, there might be a need for hospitalization.

Just like the Sildenafil Citrate— a medication used to treat erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension. Its most common adverse reactions (≥ 2%) include headache, flushing, dyspepsia, abnormal vision, nasal congestion, back pain, myalgia, nausea, dizziness and rash. Patients should seek emergency treatment if an erection lasts over four hours. Patients should stop Sildenafil Citrate and seek medical care if a sudden decrease or loss of hearing and also that of vision in one or both eyes.

Since side effects paired with adverse effects can be fatal and need to be reversed or given antidote immediately, a very extra cautious effort not to interchange them with the main effects in the prescription process must be always observed. After all, it’s the lives of patients at stake here.

It’s ironic to note that people who seek treatments for their ailments or to prolong their lives become sicker or morbidly end up six feet underground simply because of such medical error. So, it’s still best to deal with health conditions like hair loss the natural way, especially with NOVUHAIR that offers the safe and natural effects.

With 19 natural ingredients—mostly standardized herbal extracts, essential oils and co-factor nutrients—it does not only help prevent the hair loss malady, but also aid in stimulating growth of the “crowning glory.” Set aside those chemical-based topical scalp solutions out there. PH Leads Advancement of ASEAN Women
Economic Empowerment Agenda

The Philippines continued its championship of women's economic empowerment with its staging of the ASEAN Women's Business Conference ( AWBC ) on August 31 at the Philippine International Convention Center, Pasay City.

In partnership with the ASEAN Women Entrepreneurs' Network ( AWEN ) and the Philippine Commission on Women ( PCW ), the Philippines' Department of Trade and Industry ( DTI ) gathered women business leaders and delegates from the public and private sector in ASEAN member states and its dialogue partners to put forward policies and initiatives that will enhance women's participation in business and innovation in the integrated ASEAN Economic Community.

Over 600 local and international delegates participated in the conference that featured seven panel discussions that tackled topics relevant to the economic empowerment of women including gender equality, inclusive business and innovation.

" The Philippines has made good on its commitment to the principle of gender equality as reflected in our institutions. With this Conference, we are calling for stronger policy support and more initiatives for the economic empowerment of women in the ASEAN region as it is integral in achieving an inclusive, innovation-led growth in the integrated regional community, "said DTI Undersecretary for Trade and Investments Promotion Nora k. Terrado who chairs the ASEAN Committee on Business and Investment Promotion.

For its part, the private sector-led AWEN holds that partnership between the public and private sector is key to achieving gender equality.

" AWEN, with its members, works closely with governments in identifying major barriers to women's economic participation particularly in addressing key issues such as limited access of women-led micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises to market, assets, and finance. Key programs with our partners are also in place in forwarding innovation and technology across the network, " said AWEN Chair Pacita Juan.

The AWBC, which capped a week long program of related events, put forward an action agenda for both public and private sectors entitled " Mainstreaming Women's Economic Empowerment in ASEAN."

The statement endorsed the outcome of the forum on " Women's Economic Empowerment: the Next Driver of ASEAN's Success" on August 29 that was co-hosted by Australia.

It also reaffirmed the commitment to eliminate widespread and entrenched disparities in women's access to economic opportunities and resources and ensure inclusive development that was elaborated in the forum " Mainstreaming ASEAN Women
in Trade and Goods and Services toward ASEAN Economic Community 2025 " that was sponsored by the United States on August 30.

The AWBC call to action also welcomed the Women ICT Frontier Initiative ( WIFI ), a capacity building program on information and communication technology ( ICT ) for women entrepreneurs of the Asian and Pacific Training Centre for ICT Development of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific.
